How to Help a Loved One
Helping a loved one get treatment for depression
If your teen is struggling with intense symptoms of depression, you know that part of it may be related to the dramatic changes that occur during adolescence. The symptoms of teen depression are far greater than the normal ups and downs experienced by teenagers. Depression is a serious mental disorder that requires treatment at a specialty center to prevent complications, and you’re probably feeling a range of perfectly normal emotions – guilt, fear, sadness. You know you need to help your teen, but you don’t know how to approach the subject.
Here are some tips for guiding your teen into a depression treatment center:
Offer unconditional support: Let your depressed adolescent or teen know that you’re there for them no matter what. Make it clear that you’re ready to help them seek treatment at a treatment center for their depression. Validate their feelings – even if you don’t understand their feelings – and take their feelings seriously.
Listen: Rather than trying to talk your adolescent or teen out of being depressed – even if their concerns and problems seem trivial – really try and listen to what they have to say. You’re in no position to judge them for their feelings – everyone’s entitled to their own feelings. Don’t lecture. Instead, listen with an open mind and allow your adolescent or teen to express themselves.
Persistence: Adolescents or teens are often resistant to the idea of a depression treatment center, so guide your child into treatment slowly and gently. Emphasize that you’re going to be there for them through the whole process.
Research: Find a depression treatment center that specializes in treating adolescents and make an appointment with the intake staff to tour the depression treatment center with your teen. Be sure to ask any questions you have about their depression treatment center to ease any apprehension you may feel.

A residential depression treatment center that specializes in treating teens who have mood disorders is an effective way to stabilize and treat depression. Types of Treatment
Types of depression treatment offered at Village Behavioral Health near Knoxville, TN
When you first come to our depression treatment center in Knoxville, you will undergo a variety of assessments to help us determine how best to help you. The medical evaluation will determine if there are any physical problems that may be contributing to your depression. The psychiatric examination will allow us to better understand the severity of your depression and if you are struggling with any co-occurring disorders. We’ll take the results of your evaluations and sit down with you and your loved ones to create a plan of care for your stay at our depression treatment center.
Medication may be prescribed by one of our physicians at our treatment center to help control the symptoms of depression so that you’re better able to participate in your care. Some people may only require medication for the short-term and are able to wean off of the medication under the supervision of our physician. Others may require more long-term medication management to assist in their continued recovery.
Individual therapy is used to help you best understand the root causes of your depression and any co-occurring disorders. You may use individual treatment therapy to discuss the problems you’re facing and process the emotions you’re feeling. Our therapists at our treatment center often use cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for treating depression in teens. CBT allows us to examine the negative thoughts you have and replace them with more positive ways of viewing the world. This will, in turn, allow you to make better choices in the future. Additionally, we weave a variety of therapeutic modalities into your therapies, such as behavior modification therapy, DBT, and trauma-focused CBT.
Group therapy is a very important part of your stay with us. We offer multiple groups each day that will allow you to work with peers who are struggling with similar problems so that you each can grow, learn, and heal. Group topics may aim to teach you more about depression, triggers for relapse, taking responsibility for one’s behavior, problem-solving skills, and social skills.
Family therapy sessions are an imperative part of your stay with us and are held at least once a week – more if needed. We hold family sessions to address issues in the family dynamic, ways your loved ones can support you during your recovery, and allow all family members to openly discuss the ways in which depression has impacted their life.
Our residential depression treatment center uses an eclectic approach to treatment and so we firmly believe in using experiential methods alongside traditional therapeutic approaches to assist in the healing process. Experiential methods may include:
- Crafts
- Music therapy
- Dance therapy
- Drama
- Sports and recreational therapy
- Adventures – such as our ropes course
- Mindfulness
- Relaxation and meditation
Continuing Care
Continuing care and levels of treatment for depression
At Village Behavioral Health, a depression treatment center in Knoxville, we begin planning for your aftercare the moment you walk through our doors. You’ll work with your loved ones and your therapist to identify step-down options for you. This may include an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), which will allow you to focus on your recovery during the day and slowly reintegrate back into your community in the evenings.
Several weeks before you leave us, your depression treatment team will work with you and your loved ones and make a recommendation for your continued care. When an appropriate aftercare option has been identified, our discharge team will work with other providers to ensure you have appointments and referrals for an IOP, PHP, or traditional outpatient therapy as needed.
