How to Help a Loved One
Helping a loved one get treatment for prescription drug addiction
If your adolescent or teen is struggling with prescription drug addiction, their addiction may spiral further out of control. You may be frustrated and angry that your adolescent or teen has resorted to abusing prescription drugs and may not know exactly how to approach the subject. You may be afraid to say anything, fearful that things may get worse in your relationship with your adolescent or teen. It’s likely that their prescription drug abuse has stressed the entire family. Here are some tips for guiding your teen into treatment:
Understand the prescription drug addiction: Addiction is a complex disease, not a poor lifestyle choice, and you need to learn more about the prescription drug addiction process and how it has impacted your teen and your family. Attend a 12-step meeting in your area to understand what people who struggle with prescription drug abuse have to say about their challenges so that you can gain a full understanding of what your adolescent or teen is facing.
Seek support: You may feel your life is falling apart around you – you’ve lost control of your adolescent or teen, you can’t relate with them, and you may see their drug abuse as a sign of a far bigger problem. It’s time to seek support for yourself. Find a therapist at a drug rehab center who specializes in prescription drug addiction with whom you can work out some of the feelings and challenges you’re facing.
Talk it out: Talk to your adolescent or teen about the things you’ve noticed in their behavior using “I” statements. Remind them of what they can lose by remaining addicted to prescription drugs and what they will gain in recovery in prescription drug abuse rehab. Gently but firmly guide your teen into a residential rehab program for prescription drug abuse at a treatment center.

The medical examination will let us determine if you’re suffering medical complications from your prescription drug abuse. The psychological evaluation will tell us if you’re struggling with any co-occurring disorders. We’ll take the results of these evaluations and sit down with your treatment team to create a plan of prescription drug abuse rehab that meets all of your needs – mind, body, and soul.
Medication may be used at the beginning of your rehab at our prescription drug abuse treatment center under the careful watch of our in-house physician and nurse practitioner.
